NYS Move Over Law Expanded

Disabled Vehicle

Last week Governor Hochul signed into the law the expanded Move Over Bill.

The original law requires drivers to slow down and if possible, change lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle with its lights flashing or passing maintenance workers on the side of the road.

The expanded law now includes ANY disabled vehicle on the side of the road, not just emergency vehicles. So, when you approach ANY vehicle on the side of the road you are required to slow down and if possible, change lanes.

So, avoid a ticket and help keep people safe by slowing down and moving over. 300 drivers are struck and killed on the roadside annually.
